march 2021 reread: just as wonderful as the first read! i physically read it this time, as i thought it would have illustrations. either it's just the US copy that doesn't, or they started in book 2. but still! i really love willow and oswin, and i definitely forgot a lot that happened. always good to reread a fun middle grade! on to book 2 = )

3.5 if you are looking for a 9-12 book filled with sweet characters who are fighting the good fight and a really grumpy cat who is definitely not a cat then this book is going to do something for you.
A really fun read! The ending was particularly touching, and I greatly look forward to the series. Recommend to fans of practical types of magic, like Tiffany Aching and the Charms class in Hogwarts or the Burrow's magic.
I'm not sure what it was about this book that didn't make me completely love it; I definitely enjoyed it for sure but there was something that stopped me falling completely in love with the plot and the characters.
I feel that the book just never quite reached it's potential; it had a solid plot and solid characters but it just didn't quite hit the peak that I thought it could have done. This could be because it's the first book in a series and so the world and characters will be developed more as the series goes on.
It's definitely a lighthearted and enjoyable read for younger people; there's fantasy and witches and trolls and dragons! What more could you ask for?!
