Fascinating book about the man who founded Partners in Health and his mission to serve the poor.
This book offers its reader a glimpse of compassion and empathy that the world needs more of. This is the story of Small groups of people changing the world for the better. Regardless of our religious or spiritual beliefs, May we all come to exemplify the preferential option for the poor that Jesus lived and Paul Farmer emulated.
I think this one will stick with me. In this “America first” political climate this book is an important reminder of our responsibility and capacity for good. Also a reminder that progress is hard and requires hard work!
I think this book is for people that yet aren't radicalized, people that yet do not know about not only health inequality and inequity within our country but also among other countries, and people that do not yet know how capitalism, the US, and other countries, have negatively affected the development, wellbeing, and ability to thrive of other countries and communities. I wanted the book to focus more on the history of Haiti and these impoverished communities, but it focuses so much on Paul Farmer, and as impressive as he was as a human being, it wasn't enough for me. The way in which the story was told was a bit too slow and boring for me to continue.

Dr. Paul Farmer is the founder of Partners in Health (Massachusetts), a non-profit whose mission is to provide healthcare to the poor. This book is about Dr. Farmer and this mission. Starting in Haiti, Dr. Farmer and PIH work not only to bring free healthcare to the poorest of the poor but redefine what that actually means. In tackling diseases like malaria, HIV/AIDS and tuberculosis, the conditions that make the poor susceptible to these diseases also need to be addressed. Through PIH, he's been able to provide clean water, food, improvements in housing and curative medications to people in Haiti, Peru, Guatemala, Mexico, several countries in Africa and right outside their front door in Massachusetts. In fact, PIH has effected change in how certain diseases are treated as advised by the WHO. Here in Massachusetts, we can thank PIH in joining the fight against Covid-19 right now. Amazing book, amazing story, amazing human, amazing work!
This is an amazing book. It makes you rethink your whole outlook on the poor and their right to medical care. Paul Farmer is an inspiration.
This book was in some ways life changing. It started me on a new path by opening my eyes to wanting to move from the private to public sector in order for my work to be more than just making money.
