I wanted to update this review after re-reading Othello this summer— I first read the play last September when I started at sixth form, re-read it again in class, and have since seen it twice, but never re-read it in full.
Summer makes me feel so empty, there was something about having my annotated edition of this out, a note pad and a blue pen next to me, that made me feel whole again. I cannot tell you how happy I will be when I am in my English class and alive once more!
The quote that stuck out to me on this occasion was an exclamation of Iago’s. He says “O monstrous world!”, which is what the tragedy has always reflected to me. It is so awful, and yet so realist. Iago reflects the truth of each character to them, it is as they do not accept and address it that they are doomed to deliver it. This is ultimately shown as all ignore the ramifications of Othello’s death, asking only for it to be hid.
This drama is so important to me. Perhaps one of the texts of my adolescence. I see it in everything.

This is an older edition of the Folger Library Shakespeare series. For various reasons I'm not as fond of these as of some of the other small paperback editions of Shakespeare. I don't like the wasted space on the pages with notes; I would prefer some information about the performance history of the play, and I enjoy a broader range of illustrations than those provided in the Shakespeare series (for comparison, see the Signet Classics or Modern Library/RSC editions of the same plays, among others).
