decided to read the classic for school. It was alright, Iago was interesting but it took a good YouTube search for someone to explain the plot for me to understand what was really going on because I don't believe I will EVER understand Shakespeare

I read this for English. I thought it would be dreadful but I was rather surprised. Othello will probably be the only shakespeare work that I will ever quite like (with the exception of King Lear). I'm not going to even make a proper review for this because it has been done more often than enough.

I wanted to make a statement on people's confusion due to why Othello kills his wife when he loved her.

Othello was in the verge of doubt ever since he married Desdemona. Although he was a general, he still wasn't that highly respected due to his skin colour. All Iago (referred to as honest Iago) had to do to cause commotion was push that seed of doubt in Othello a little further to his breaking point, it was then jealousy overtook all Othello's morals.

The story had a basic meaning:
"Don't believe everything you hear and only half of what you see"
Including other meanings based on how you interpret it.

For since these arms of mine had seven years' pith
Till now some nine moons wasted, they have used
Their dearest action in the tented field
—Othello, Othello Act 1 Scene 3

This quote alone from Act 1 instantly tells you all you need to know about Othello himself. To put it in simpler terms, he is saying here that since he was seven years old, until 9 months ago, he has been fighting on the battlefield. Therefore, he is used to his enemy being on the other side, not amongst his own ranks. This is my own analysis by the way, my teacher loved it. You are welcome.

O, beware my lord of jealousy.
It is the green-eyed monster which doth mock
The meat it feeds on.
—Iago, Othello Act 3 Scene 3

Enter Iago. He is but a flag-bearer, a third-ranking officer. He resents Othello picking Cassio to be second in command instead of him, believing Othello to be conceited. So he decides to poison Othello's mind with the idea that his wife Desdemona is having an affair with Cassio. The rest of the events go as one would expect from Shakespeare, ending in a most poetic tragedy.

I read this for my last year in high school, and when I tell you I enjoyed it so much I annotated nearly every page of my copy! It's remarkable, a true masterpiece. I feel so sorry for poor Desdemona. She deserved the world, but the world didn't deserve her.

All Shakespeare is recommended.

In the beginning I found the book challenging since I’ve never really read Shakespeare before but after a while I got into it, I watched a few videos beforehand too which helped knowing what to except in a way. Yet the book was full of surprises which the videos did not spoil. I kept a notebook throughout my read but now in the end I find I didn’t need it. Good recommendation for a first Shakespeare novel.

I didn’t like it as much as Macbeth, but I still enjoyed it. Iago is scum of the earth and I hope his death is anything but swift. Othello is a fool. 4,5 stars out of 5.

For daws to peck at: I am not what I am!”
