3.5 stars, rounded up!
I really liked the beginning- it reminded me a lot of Crush, which was my favorite book of the whole series. But it fell off at some point, likely because the whole Shadow Realm premise was a little too much for a book that I’m reading solely because it uses very little brain power. (Think Twilight. I haven’t read that 12 times because it’s excellent literature, nor have I watched the movie 17 times because it’s award winning cinema)
To be clear, it wasn’t the whole Shadow Realm that didn’t work for me. I love Smokey and the people of Adarie, but just the logistics of everything seemed… not well thought out. It was giving Upside Down vibes… except not nearly as organized. Also, alternating timelines and that kind of thing gets a little too close to sci-fi, which is usually not my jam (there have been exceptions, yes, but it still has to be basic).
But at the end of the day, I got plenty of Hudson… and even his POV! And that made everything just a little bit better. He’s the reason I’ve held on this long and thankfully, that choice has paid off. One book to go!

Compared to the other books of this series, this book felt soooooo slow until the last quarter of it. I’m not sure if that’s just me though, still an amazing fucking book and glad we got to see more into Grace and Hudson’s relationship

I really really enjoyed this book. The lack of teenage drama was refreshing. And while she still hangs on to the annoying toxic feminism, there wasn't as much this time, and I appreciated that.

Spoilers!
Seeing Grace and Hudson during the time they first fell in love was so precious! I already loved them so much, but now I do even more. Knowing this part of their journey was so special! It was lighthearted most of the time but I was hella emo at the end 😅 it’s so clear that they will go to any length to make sure one another is happy and safe. Their love is so deep and pure ❤️
