Loved this a lot more than the movies. Very fast paced but engaging all the way. Also not as heavy as Lord of the Rings

Such a fun read, which is completely forgotten since it’s been about fifteen years since I last read it. I kept thinking of that advice about writing: “put a man in a tree. Throw rocks at him. Get him out of the tree.” That’s basically what this book (sometimes nearly literally) does over and over but with trolls! And goblins! And dragons! And elves! One does wonder how thirteen dwarves and the hobbit made it all the way to a dragon’s lair without the faintest idea of a plan for what to do when they arrived, but it’s all so fun to read that I’ll just dismiss that thought.
