I did not realize that this book had a magical element to it. Which normally I love, but I do not love large age gaps. So this book was largely a miss for me.

Overall, I enjoyed this book! I didn’t expect the genre to be what it is was, but it was a pleasant surprise! It’s starts off pretty slow in my opinion. The exposition is lengthy. But once I got drawn in, it was hard to put the book down. I also loved how funny it was! Truly laughed out loud.

Thoroughly enjoyed

When I first saw the cover and the author, I wasn't thinking magical realism at all. Fantasy was the last thing on my mind. I thought the flashback would just be some tie-in to Ms. Della's past, not that our MMC would turn out to be immortal. Then came the voodoo twist, and I was like... okay!

It was interesting but kind of weird, maybe because it wasn't set up properly. The world was painted as normal, so the magic felt out of place. There was no build-up or grounding for that kind of element, so it came off a bit random.

I like Ricki, but I couldn't connect deeply with her as a character. Ezra (Breeze) was more layered, but only to an extent. His history gave his character some nuance and emotional weight. It's rare for me to feel more for the male lead in a romance, but here we are.

Still, for a cursed immortal, he didn't act like someone who had lived for decades. He was winging it like someone just hearing about the curse for the first time. That broke the immersion a bit for me. Their reactions didn't match the stakes, especially toward the end. You'd expect more urgency, but instead, they were indoors vibing and saying unserious things. Lol.

The story had potential, and I was surprised by the direction it took, but I wish the magical elements had been deeper and more seamlessly woven in. The ending didn't hit hard, and for such a heavy consequence attached to the curse, the tone was too light at times.

And don't get me started on Ricki's family. Absolutely irritating. Her mum and sisters made me mad, and the indifference of her father. I'm glad she got out and proved them wrong.
