I love Williams as a storyteller and found this to be a fun whimsical journey. But it didn’t hit the way I was hoping it would. I felt like the mystery was confusing for too long. And once the magical element was explained more, I predicted how it was going to end. Still a good book, but i didn’t love it as much as I was hoping to.

What do you do knowing the person you love is going to die? This book explores the feelings around grief and love. Ricki and Ezra’s romance was told in a timeless way and I loved the pacing of their story. I loved the music and history references throughout. Although sad, I loved the ending as well.

This is a beautifully written love song. One that I very much enjoyed and will not soon forget.

Tia Williams is a very talented writer who knows how to get right to the heart of a story. I had several laugh out loud moments as well as several ugly sniffles.
Her nod to The Harlem Renaissance was very much appreciated as well!

This is a sweet story with a unique premise. Just an enough magical realism to make it interesting. However, it didn’t hold my attention the way I’d hoped, so I was able to put it down for several days at a time. This also just may be my own struggles with focus these days.

The romance was definitely rushed, but the chemistry between Ricki and Ezra eventually became convincing.
The first third of the book felt less serious than the rest…I think it was because Ricki’s family were like a clan of caricatures. That and the interspersing of a few history-laden flashbacks to the 20s made it feel disjointed. It took me a while to figure out the tone and flow.

As for character development t, I really liked Tuesday and Ms. Della as friends of Ricki. And I liked Ricki herself, even if I found her a bit unrelatable. I think this is the issue of the writing which does more describing of emotions instead of letting the characters demonstrate them.

We flash back only a couple of times and as a result don’t really dig deep enough to Ezra and the people in his world with the exception of Felice. There was a lot explained, but I still didn’t feel like I understood his motivations enough, beyond looking to fall in love:

There is a tie-in to Seven Days in June (which is a stronger, sadder book). I could see a book coming down the line for Tuesday, which I’d read.

Overall this was a little slow, but enjoyable.

A Love Song for Ricki Wilde is a beautiful love story that is unexpected and truly beautiful. I enjoyed every second of this book and its twists and turns. Although some parts of the story might seem a little predictable at first a turn comes to surprise you! I loved this book and so many of its quotable lines.
