That was… weird? What an oddly affirming tale of the sacrifices of motherhood. Though this story is strangely magical, dark, and left me wondering what just happened, I kind of loved it.
I’ve stumbled across several books in this vein. I like the magical realism and the lack of clarity on what *really* just transpired.

While to writing in this book is very beautiful at times, using wild animals as a metaphor for raising an autistic child seems pretty ableist.

I did not enjoy this book. Because it’s speculative fiction, it’s meaning is very much up for interpretation, however I interpreted Chouette as being a metaphor for raising a disabled child and I did not like the way the author chose to depict that. Kids with disabilities are not the same as violent owl babies and deserve a more accurate representation in literature that does not animalize them. I would love to hear other’s interpretations but this is not a book I would be recommending any time soon. I gave it three star because it was well written but and captivating but I did not like the overall content.

I really liked the ending. This book felt really long at some points and took a while to develop. It was all about motherhood which I can’t relate to, so I think that’s why it didn’t connect with me. The owl was also a metaphor for a child with a disability, which I thought was an interesting take. I wish I liked this book more but it was just so slow because there was no plot for 3/4 of it.
