This one was very predictable, but I still enjoyed it! It’s a stereotypical romantasy and I wish it had some more editing, but I definitely plan on continuing the series.

Fourth Wing, but with big, scary, magical wolves.
Meryn is the infamous Alleycat of the slums, a pit fighter who decides to sign up to fight in the war against the Siphons - vampires - in order to save her younger sister who has been kidnapped along with a bunch of other children.
Instead of being sent to the front, she is forced to partake in the Bonding Trials.
Deadly, dangerous challenges, dealing with a powerful, standoffish dire wolf, and treated as an outsider; is Meryn stubborn enough to survive?
I binged this. As in two sittings. If it weren’t for my dogs barking at me for a walk, it might haven been one sitting.
Yes, we have the ‘special’ Commoner girl.
We have a kind Crown Prince who doesn’t agree with his daddy’s harsh rule.
We have a shadow daddy who is basically Xaden from Fourth Wing Ctrl + C.
Yes, we had dialogue like:
”I was born ready.”
“Your concern for me is just so touching,” I drawl. “But I don’t get into accidents—I cause them.”
“Oh, we lick each other’s tattoos when we’re done. It’s an instinct to help heal the surface of the skin.”

I cringed, but I could look past it.
I just had to much fun.
I love the idea of the pack - aka found family potential.
I loved the friends she made who are protective and fierce and funny. There was also disability representation and signing was used. Whilst this wasn’t fleshed out, I did appreciate it. (Although, was this a Fourth Wing nod?)
Yes, I saw the big reveals and twists at the end. However, I was surprised by a smaller one which actually made me applaud the authors (this is written by two friends) in my head.
I love spunk in my heroines and Meryn had it.
Don’t punch the nobles, don’t punch the nobles, I chant to myself.
A perfect book if you’re in a slump or want a break between more complex, heavier books.
Arc gifted by Hatchette.

I am SCREAMING. Obsessed. Consumed. Desperate for more.
Finished this book in one sitting because I literally could not peel my eyes away. Work? Responsibilities? Sustenance? Never heard of them. From the moment I cracked open that first chapter, Direbound had me by the throat and did not let go.
I went in completely blind after seeing it recommended in a review, and let me just say — bless that review, because this book delivered in every possible way. The story just kept getting deeper, darker, and more addictive the further I got. Even when I suspected certain plot twists, they still hit harder than I expected. I screamed. Multiple times. Out loud. Alone.
There were moments where I was reading, knowing one of my predictions was about to come true, and I was still completely shook when it happened — not because I didn’t see it coming, but because of how it all unfolded. The execution? Flawless.
Meryn, our FMC, did annoy me a little at times — mostly because she wasn’t picking up on the signs that I very clearly was — but I still loved her character. Just not as much as I loved Stark. That man has me in a chokehold. I need more of him. More of them. Their chemistry, their tension, their dynamic — chef’s kiss.
I loved every single minute of reading this book. I’m unwell. I need more. Immediately.

I understand this book was a set up for the villain to be revealed but I found it glaringly obvious from the start. So the plot twist didn’t really get me, however I do find the world interesting enough that I’m hoping book 2 is more promising when it releases.
