Really good debut. LONG but decent world building. Interesting combination of graphic war college, political intrigue, family history and mystery, psychological/psychiatric thriller, and evolving love triangle.
Some twists obvious, some completely shocking.
Lovable and flawed FMC. Equally lovable MMC with complex revelation and well-paced development/progression. Love-to-hate secondary MMC villain with well-paced development and improvement. Great side characters.
A bit violent; otherwise solid. Heartbreaking twists at the ending.

I regret pre-ordering this. I swear to god I am never blind buying books again. I really thought this was going to be something special. The characters started out as flawed, but interesting. They were sympathetic and compelling, I really liked what we got from them within the first four chapters--and then chapter five... Spice for Spice which isn't even good and everything it had going for it crumpled. The characters took a turn and became shallow, the world wasn't original enough to stick with. Ugh. I know I'm being harsh but it had so much going for it and could have been a really good time! Instead it imploded into the most mid to disappointing tale with a discount Saeris and slightly more mature Violet for a FMC

i was a little iffy abt this book at first but i loved it! even tho it took inspiration from other fantasy books, i feel like it was pretty original with the plot and magic system. the FMC was a tad annoying at times but i ended up loving her! her chemistry with one of the MMC is
