Some people say this is Fourth Wing but better written. I disagree. I think this is Fourth Wing but irrationally angrier and hornier. ๐ญ This book is so fking thirsty. If you thought Fourth Wing was too horny, you wouldn't be able to STAND this book, I promise you. ๐๐ป๐คฃ Normally I love smut, but something about the smut in this book... ๐ง๐ค๐คจ
I don't usually like to compare books but I kinda have to since everyone else is shoving Fourth Wing's name in here. And I can see why. Mind you, I actually quite liked this book. The plot is interesting, the conflict is gripping and the characters are great. Except one character. The most important character. ๐ฎโ๐จ The FMC.
If you thought Violet was annoying, let me introduce you to someone unbearably infuriating ๐คฏ. Meryn is one of the most dislikeable FMCs I've encountered in a long time. She constantly communicates with anger, mockery and sarcasm but others see it as sass and wit. ๐ Meryn is constantly demanding respect but refuses to give anyone any respect. She's always disrespecting her direwolf, insulting her and calling her a "bitch" and a "wench", and then gets offended when the direwolf refuses to work with her. ๐คฆ๐ปโโ๏ธ๐๐ฎโ๐จ
Meryn also has the WORST victim mentality I've ever seen in an FMC and always thinks she has it the worst and assumes everyone is rejecting her when she's the one who's rejecting everything and everyone. ๐คฌ She's selfish and self-centered and always blames others instead of reflecting on her own actions and recognizing that she brought alot of things upon herself with her own choices and decisions. ๐คฆ๐ปโโ๏ธ I nearly DNFed this book so many times because of this bitch.
It's actually so disappointing because I really did like this book. Unfortunately, it's told from only one perspective which is the FMC and when the FMC is unbearably infuriating and frustrating, it makes it really hard to like the book properly. ๐ฎโ๐จ๐ญ
Will I read the next one? I truly have no idea. I do want to know what happens next. I'm concerned about the children. ๐ I liked Stark and I want to see more of his character. ๐ But if Meryn's personality doesn't improve in the next book, I'm burning this series. ๐๐ป

Loved this book. Is it original? No, not really. Is it predictable? Yes, kind of. Did I feel the entire time like I was reading an amalgamation of Fourth Wing and ACOTAR book 1? Yes, absolutely! But it was delightful and I was so thoroughly entertained by the plot, romantic tension, mystery elements, and the dire wolves that I can't say much against it. Can't wait for the next one.
