This is a very sweet and emotional story. The fantasy elements are pretty inventive. It feels a bit like a lighted version of The Clackity which I did enjoy a smidge more than this. My biggest complaint about this book is it did feel like it was circling the drain of some points and conversations which I suppose is like real life but it made it feel a tad repetitive

4.5 Stars: I really enjoyed this one. I got the magical realism feels I was craving so will definitely be a reread. It also gave me a ghibli feel. I adored feeling the feelings of Elliot's first crush but I did guess the plot twist early on but I am not the intended age group. I do think everybody can learn a lot about healing, grief, and changes from this.

It will definitely be a reread.

Eliot is in desperate, immediate need of therapy.

Why does she call her grandma Babung when they're Japanese? What language even is that?

Crochet is mentioned multiple times, but it also said that Babung knitted the crocheted animals. Not at all how that works. They're different things.

Really enjoyed this! I loved the theme surrounding death, memory, loss, and grief and all the main characters were great!

When I realized Hazel was just a ghost, I was fully shook. Reminded me of The Swallow by Charis Cotter. And then the ghost monster being the other half of Hazel? Fully shookith. I had to go re-read the scene where Hazel breaks the teapot, because I was sure her and Mrs. Delvaux spoke to one another, but they didn't. From Mrs. Delvaux's perspective, either the teapot fell on its own, or Eliot did it and was too frightened to say anything.

Learning that all the ghosts were from the same family, and bits and pieces of their story was super cute. Happy that they're all together now.

Graham was super interesting. I liked how Eliot couldn't remember him after talking. Until Graham and the cat were in the same scene at the end there, I fully thought Graham was the cat, and just shapeshifting back and forth to try to help Eliot out.

Figuring out Graham was the grim reaper was a huge surprise. And then Eliot's grandmother stealing his key for Eliot to find? 🥺 Adorable. Now, I will only ever picture Graham like the grim reaper from the Sims 4.
