I probably read this when I was younger but I couldn’t remember anything about it. So (re?)read it for a prompt that was a book challenged in Canadian schools.
As it turns out I kinda hate most of this book. So much fatphobia.
But the end still made me cry.
Especially when the dad comforts his son.

forever my favorite book. it never fails to absolutely destroy me
Ratio of amount of time needed to complete versus quality certainly makes this a great read. I was immediately interested, however the resolution provides unsatisfying answers. I recognize this is intentional, but it left me feeling bummed.
I recommend you not read this book in isolation. Expect the desire to discuss and lament.
Also, foreshadowing is brutally obvious for the adult reader.
