I enjoyed this book better than the first of the series, but that might be due to a growing fondness for the returning characters. There are also some delightful new characters. A nice lighthearted story if you’re looking for something to make you smile or laugh. Tiffany is a character who I wish I had read about when I was young. But the Nac Mac Feegle’s might be more PG-13 if you could understand a word they say. Still, they manage to get their point across, and I could listen to them all day long regardless. Can’t wait for the next one!

Chosen for Bedtime Reading 10/23/2022 - spoilers below this line.

11/27/2022 - Our Story So Far:
Annagramma, leader of the Mean Girls, Discworld Style, meets Tiffany and makes her doubt the existence of her Invisible Hat. When Tiffany checks on it, SOMETHING finds her...

12/4/2022 - Our Story So Far:
The Hiver took over Tiffany, and turned her into a Mean Girl. Turns out she can be MUCH meaner than Annagrama. The Feegles find Miss Level. Tiffany defeats the Hiver! Or does she?

12/11/2022 - Our Story So Far:
Miss Level wakes up to find herself dead. Well, half, anyway. The Feegles split the party, Rob stays behind in Tiffany's mind to fight the hiver, while the rest go off on an epic stealing spree. Boss battle!

12/26/2022 - Our Story So Far:
Mistress Weatherwax visits. Well, she's the mentor, so it's kindof obligatory. She and Tiffany discuss what a witch is, what the hiver is, and what to do about it. Bottom line: Nobody knows what to do, but Tiffany has to do it anyway.

The second in the "Tiffany Aching" series. I read and really enjoyed "The Wee Free Men". But I have to be honest: this one is not as good. Maybe because there's not as much wee free men. No Granny Aching. Maybe because it suffers from "sequel syndrome" where, since her first goal was already accomplished, now the story struggles with achievements. It's about Tiffany living with the witches, and now she has to go to "witch school". She meets colorful characters, but suffers from annoyances and problems. Rather than something to achieve, to reach for.

This was my Mother-in-law's book and I read it while we stayed with them for a few days.

After discovering the joy of the Wee Free Men recently I was very keen to read this. To start with I will admit to not being that impressed, in particular as there were more than a couple of clumsy sentences that I stumbled over (very unusual for TP who is usually so smooth with his writing).

However, the story rapidly took over and I got caught up with Tiffany (still a fantastic female character) and her new life. The Hiver is a great monster, forcing a confrontation much earlier than I was expecting and leading the story in unexpected directions.

And then just as I was enjoying it, Granny Weatherwax turns up and it gets even better. My favourite character who hasn't been around for a long while just makes the end of the book. It all becomes slightly confusing again at the end (though not as much as Wee Free Men did) but has a nicely tied up resolution making you reassess the story and the characters.

I loved it. Can't wait to read the next one now.
