(i read the novel but now that i know theres a manhwa Out There...imma Die)
cn: suicide, murder, life sucks what do.
//
man. this book. god. difficult stuff.
i don't think about people going on death row much. i wrote a thing once about the bali 9, but that was pretty much it.
i do however think about my own death a lot. i think about it in different ways, i guess. i think about it when i'm in the shower, i think about it when i see a motorbike speeding too fast, nearly hitting the side of the car i'm in, i think about it when i'm about to sleep.
this book begins with us knowing that the main character has failed her third suicide attempt. her whole perspective is brimming with a quiet self-loathing until she meets an inmate on death row. the book alternates between glimpses of his childhood and the current day through her eyes.
in a literary sense it's not groundbreaking, or anything, but after i read this i just kind of sat down and thought about why i was so obsessed with my own death, and i thought about ways i've been just wasting time (and soz if this is cliched or anything but GOD rip) and i just. aaaaaaa

Tadinya setelah baca 2/3 dari buku ini, saya mau ngasih 2 bintang. Tapi endingnya berhasil bikin saya ganti pikiran dan ngasih 3 bintang ;D
I came across the movie based on this book a few years back and the story instantly became one of my favorites. Since at that time there wasn't any chance for me to read the book, I had to make do with with the movie and no matter how many times I've watched it, it always made me bawl me eyes out, witch was rare since I'm usually not the type who get's so emotional over movies.
I can't even explain how happy I was when I saw that a publisher in my country picked it up. Every few days I wen't to their website in hopes to see news about the date they would finally publish it. I almost danced with joy when I saw it in the bookstore and rushed to buy. The book did not disappoint and I'm truly happy to have it in my collection.

Alright, look. I have a personal reservation in offering critique on books that were originally written in another language because I really believe they will always be slightly altered, so please take the following with a grain of salt:
This is a beautifully written book. A beautifully heartbreaking, frustrating book. I would put this in the same category as “A Little Life” by Hanya Yanagihara. I would not recommend this to anyone who is currently in a less-than-good state of mental and emotional wellbeing. It follows a tragic main character, who hasn’t healed from past sexual trauma, who starts accompanying her Aunt, a nun, on her evangelical visits to a ‘death-row’ prison. There she meets an inmate who sparks a change in her view of life, death, and her responsibilities to herself and her family.
Beautiful portrayal of Christian forgiveness, learned selflessness, and healing from sexual trauma. The main character is the one who carries and develops these themes; I felt that the secondary character (who I think is supposed to also do a lot of the developmental work as well) falls a little short as a fully-rounded character. I don’t feel a lot of empathy or emotion for them besides what is voiced by the main character.
I was recommended this book and told it was a romance. And like… it’s definitely not. Literally no mention of romance until the very end when it’s like “what if?”.
Rated three stars because this type of book just really isn’t my jam. I feel back because it was well-written and beautiful, but really really difficult to read because its just not what I want to feel when reading. I like to read for the escapism.
