This was a different Poirot story in that Poirot is trying to solve a murder before it happens! It makes for some tricky detective work. And Poirot and Hastings are both definitely not body guards lol.
I thought this mystery was clever though—that reveal really had me gasping! Hastings was also dumfounded. It was great. (It was also great that he wasn't annoying in this story lol.) The Poirot-explains-the-whole-mystery chapter in this book was particularly well done—though I do sometimes think Poirot makes questionable decisions!
That being said, one of the suspects is a Jewish character, and a few time other characters made antisemitic remarks. I did think that those dialogues could've easily been revised or removed and it would not have changed the story at all. I hope in future editions of this book, they can take that out. But I did just buy the book so as far as I know, it's present in every edition.

THAT WAS MAGNIFICENT
poirot from the start (minus points for hastings tho), incredible women characters (ye olde kids these days good to see its always like this) and what a layered and entertaining mix of mystery AND thriller.
ill have to reread ackroyd and see how it holds up but to me this one is ALMOST better
