Poirot & Hastings get tangled up with Nick Buckley who keeps having close brushes with death. Wonderfully melodramatic & pacy with a fun twist that I didn't see coming. The fake séance was eveything.

felt like a step farther in a few directions from previous poirots. Poirot's bravado and the goofiness of his relationship with Hastings, his exaggerated despair at failure, the over the topness of the reveal scene, the complexity of the motive and number of subplots, how much it feels like Poirot is explaining how to read a mystery story as he talks Hastings through things. Everything just goes a little farther, but in a fun way I think. The stakes of the plot were a little lower than [b:The Big Four|16316|The Big Four (Hercule Poirot, #4)|Agatha Christie|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1372506728l/16316._SY75_.jpg|721292] which was nice, but still pulled in some crazy things.

Also some anti-semitism and phrenology stuff from M. Poirot which you hate to see.

Totally solid mystery, kept me guessing when I thought I had it figured out through to the end. I'm intrigued and want to continue with Agatha Christie's works now!!

Nie je žiadnym tajomstvom, že milujem Agathu, mám za sebou už desiatky jej kníh. Avšak táto, hoci má prekvapivo vysoké hodnotenie, patrila podľa mňa k tým slabším.

Prípad mi tentokrát neprišiel nejako extrémne zaujímavý, zvláštna bola aj voľba rozprávača, ktorý jeden z najdôležitejších dní vyšetrovania preležal v posteli s maláriou. Žiaľ, tentokrát som sa pri čítaní celkom nudila a aj ku koncu som sa blížila skôr zo zotrvačnosti než z obrovskej zvedavosti, ktorá moje čítanie autorkiných kníh zväčša poháňa.

Ani záver ma neoslnil, pretože hoci bol môj hlavný podozrivý niekto úplne iný, v priebehu čítania som si povedala, že dúfam, že to nebude xy a keď to bola osoba xy, môjmu nadšeniu to veru nepridalo.
Agatha, samozrejme, nemôže za to, že v poslednej dobe je je tento zvrat "overused", takže skôr nad ním prevraciam očami. Určite patrila k prvým autorom, čo ho použili, ale keďže v poslednej dobe iný pomaly ani nevidím, nezlepšilo to môj názor na knihu.

Avšak, čo je pri štandarde jej kníh pomerne slabá kniha neznamená, že je o všeobecne zlá kniha. Stále je výborne napísaná, stále ma tu čakali prekvapenia, ktoré som nepredvídala (napríklad ten motív).
Takže bolo to fajn... ale len fajn, nič viac.
