mysterious fast-paced

Hercule Poirot is vacationing in Cornwall when he meets Nick, a young woman who lives in End House, who details to him her many near death experiences. A heavy picture frame fell right on her bed, her car brakes failed while driving and a boulder almost fell onto her from a cliff. And now, when Hercule Poirot meets her, it is right after a bullet narrowly misses her head.

It appears that someone wants her dead, but Hercule Poirot will not allow it to happen. He will uncover the would be murderer. All he needs to find is the motive.

This was so clever and fun, I enjoyed every word and definitely didn't foresee the ending. A great murder mystery.

A greek edition of this story was the first Agatha Christie book I bought with my own money, probably when I was 14 or 15. Since then I've read it many times, but it's this one that it's in English. I remember the first time I've read it that I was really excited about the twist in the end. After so many times there weren't any surprises for me but reading it in English was another experience.

When Poirot hears that Nick, the young mistress of End House, has recently escaped a series of life-threatening accidents, he suspects attempted murder and is convinced the would-be killer will soon strike again - can he unmask them in time…?

I thoroughly enjoyed this Poirot (currently second-favourite* of my ongoing Sharky Reads Christie project) - although I did manage to figure out the odd piece of the puzzle, it kept me guessing until the end. The denouement was clever, took me utterly by surprise yet was completely credible and the clues had been right under my nose all along, a combination which is exactly what I want from a Christie mystery. Having Poirot engage his little grey cells to prevent a murder rather than to solve it once committed was a fresh approach, and I enjoyed this switch-up and how it played out immensely. Hastings was on fine form as per usual, as obtuse yet self-confident as ever. I want to avoid giving any spoilers, so I will leave it there - a gripping, unexpected approach to a murder mystery where Poirot must solve the murder before it actually happens…

*In case you were wondering, my favourite so far has been The Murder of Roger Ackroyd

Yet another Agatha Christie that ends in a suicide.
