Art’s complicated relationship with his father, Vladek’s complicated relationship with both the past and present, and the haunting sense that, for those who survived, the Holocaust never really ended, were things that my students were just dimly starting to understand when we had to move on. Maybe one day, I'll take an entire class through it.

This story is told through flashbacks, with there being quit a bit of humor in the present. We obviously know Vladek survives, but the how is what keeps you reading.
This first book ends with Vladek arriving at Auschwitz, so this is without a doubt a series.
It was a slow book in how he got to that point though. But it really hammered home just how many years Vladek and co were hiding and hoping and praying.
This book is poignant but true. And its humor does help to soften the blow.
