1.5

Was just going to leave it at 1 but the Epilogue's last paragraphs surprised me and gave it that 0.5

Anyway. I don't know what was worse, the main character (Greer Macdonald), the plot (I was expecting ACTUAL murder, not psychological/teasing kind of stuff) or the narration and passing of this (soooo slow, and also, people complained about pop culture references but I dismissed it at first, thinking they were exaggerating... girl, I was wrong, omg).

Greer... *sigh* I haven't disliked a character like this since a long time ago, I think. She's... a mess. One minute she's smart, the other minute (and sadly, she's like this almost all the book, even until the very end) she's like "oh, does Channel like Henry too? Does she like Shafeen? Wait, do /they/ like her? *pang of jealousy*" and "would Lara still be happy after she knows Henry's not more /his/ and is /mine/ now? I want to tell her. I want to tell her how he kissed me and is my boyfriend now" and even more "ahh, Henry told me I'm beautiful and kissed me, but then Shafeen told me I'm beautiful and... yes, he kissed me, ohhh *swoons*"
I would have liked the romance with Shafeen if Greer had a better personality, or was a different character.

And then the stupid ending of not going to the police? Or to the media, at least? If the police was bought. They (Medievals and their families, the friars, the Order) were all a bunch of murderers or accomplices at the very least. Ugh.

I started reading this thinking there was going to be actual murder here? Or something like the Hunger Games where the "blood sports" turned into an actual human hunt? Was deceived by the summary, so I was very disappointed.

I ended up skimming so much text and pop culture references, jfc. Also, I'm tired of the bullshit of "technology kills life" or "ohhh things are not like they used to" "in my times, my generation was like this and this" "social media and internet and technology suxxx eewww" Ugh.

I will not continue with this series (it seems there is a sequel). Also, wtf are those uniforms anyway? And no matter how "posh" or "fancy" that school (STAGS) may be, even if I have all the money in the world and there weren't a bunch of murderers/accomplices involved, I still wouldn't assist there. It sounds like the most boring, uninteresting, ugly school ever.

The start was a bit slow but once it got going, I was super invested in the story and found the whole plot really fascinating.

I am tempted to shelve this as a re-told tale, because it is so strongly and strangely reminiscent of the modern gothic romances I used to read in the Readers Digest Condensed Book collections of the 1970s. It's a fun read, but sheesh is it trite.
