This book was an easy and fun read! It definitely falls into this new class of books that are trying and failing to be The Secret History, so much so that the Scheming Murderer is also named Henry, but I had fun anyways! I will say that every other line the protagonist namedrops a film, which is slightly annoying, but at the same time I’m constantly saying this piece of media is just x song and y other piece of media, so I suppose I can’t critique too harshly on that. While the themes are bluntly spelled out for the reader, I still think it was a highly enjoyable book and a much-needed lighter (feels a bit strange to say that about a book whose topic is murder but okay) read than my classwork. I had FUN!

I bought this with the intent of only ever reading the first book (not the first time I've written that...oops). However, I really loved this book and may even consider reading the other books in the series! It was easy to follow and pick back up even after months of it sitting on my desk as I went through yet another semester of undergrad and finals.
If you want something with a bunch of unexpected twists and turns, this is not the book for you. BUT if you want a book that is character driven and has a really fun adventure with a dash of murderous frenzy then pick this book up! Lots of fun facts about movies, old-timy traditions, and other stuff. Overall, a good time.

Euhm...

"I was busted. I like to think of myself as a Strong Feminist Girl, but since Henry had invited me to Longcross, I'd been letting the sisterhood down a bit by obsessing about what I would wear."

"Feminism stood a step backward because the first thing I thought when I saw him was that he was hot."

I don't think you know what feminism is.

I'm pretty disappointed that they didn't actually kill Henry, it kind of felt like false advertising to me. If they had said it was their fault he died, instead of murder, I would not have been that disappointed about it.

Cult idea: love it, can't wait to see more

2.5 stars!

I thought the premise of this book was really good and that it started off strong but by the end the plot just got kind of ridiculous. I think this would have worked so much better as a stand alone as it's super obvious that it's been set up for sequels. The sudden shift to 'it's a cult!' was, in my opinion, not a great idea and it ruined my enjoyment of the book tbh. I thought the writing was really good tho and the amount of detail put in was also really superb.

Another reason i didn't really like this book was because I thought Greer, the main character, was kind of really annoying most of the time, like Henry was a l i t e r a l murderer and she still felt bad for him? Just cos he was cute and pretended to be nice to her? no m'am. i also thought she was a bit wanky with all her talk of being a 'bad feminist' for thinking a guy was cute and bollocks like that. she just felt kind of forced as a character and i ended not really liking her at all

so, okay read, not offensive in anyway but i will not be reading the sequels.
