Very similar to Crime and Punishment in that it begins with a fascinating and complex exploration of very morally ambiguous corners of the late 19th century. This one is more on the nose, but definitely achieves a lot more. Ivan's speech in the restaurant or his interaction with the devil is definitely an all timer. Just a shame that it (like C&P) shifts into a bare-faced murder mystery. I appreciate that the philosophical sequences aren't artificially thrown in like Mann, these ones are natural and fitting, but it peters out for me towards the end once it starts pulling its philosophical punches

I'm not really sure I understand this novel, if I'm going to be honest. The characters feel thin and overwrought, the pacing feels a little wonky (patricide doesn't happen until 75% through the novel), Maybe I'm not Russian enough? But I finished, and I have the same sense of accomplishment as I would had I finished a marathon, lol.

Maybe the best book I’ve ever read.
