I didn't read the previous Magician's novels, I have only seen the TV show. And sorry but I didn't care for this book. Another point of view books always intrigue me when I hear/read descriptions about it, and then when I finally read them I am like "Why did I even bother with this one?". I had to force myself to read as many pages as I did before just giving up on Alice and her point of view. Thanks #NetGalley for this opportunity but #TheMagiciansAlicesStory isn't my cup of tea.
What it's about: This is the story of Lev Grossman's The Magicians but told from Alice's point of view instead of Quentin's.
What I thought: Despite this change in perspective, the story felt pretty much the same. And having read the original novels (and seen all of the episodes of the show based on the original books), there wasn't really anything surprising going on.
It's funny - as I was reading this, I kept thinking, "No, that's not how that goes; and that's not what that character looks like." I've totally gotten on board with the SyFy TV series made from the original novels, and it felt really weird, in light of their more diverse casting, to see a bunch of white kids as the main characters. I had to keep reminding myself that this was actually from the original author, so this is probably more in line with what he saw in his head (and, quite probably, what I originally saw in mine when I read the books).
Why I rated it like I did: This was basically a re-tread of the original novels, condensed and cut short to follow Alice's original arc. It's fine, but I feel like the TV show has actually done a more interesting job of capturing the look and feel of the novels.

Thank you to NetGalley for a free review copy of this book.
Having never read the Magicians book series or knowing anything about it, I very much enjoyed this book! The story was really good as was the artwork. Not knowing anything about this series or the characters did not hinder me in any way while I was reading this. The characters were fully developed and all had good story arcs as the book progressed. I would love if there were more books that centered on each character like this one did one Alice. Overall this was a very interesting read and I would recommend it if you are into fantasy books such as The Chronicles of Narnia and similar titles.

The Magicians Original Graphic Novel: Alice's Story by Lilah Sturges, Lev Grossman, and Pius Bak is a graphic novel that tells the story of The Magicians from the character Alice's standpoint. First, I've never read The Magicians, but I did watch the first two seasons on SciFy, so I was amazed at how closely this graphic novel really parallels the TV show. At the same time, I don't think anyone needs to have any familiarity with the book series or television series to actually enjoy and understand this graphic novel.
Personally, it was fun to see how the graphic artists portrayed the different characters in the graphic novel, which is clearly not in sync with the TV series.
Overall, I found this graphic novel a lot of fun and a very quick read. I would recommend this book to fans of the books, television show, and people not familiar with the source material at all. It's just a fun urban fantasy story.
I was provided with a copy of the book prior to publication to read and review. I am thankful to the publisher for this opportunity, but it has not impacted my review.

Fun read, didn't blow my mind or anything. Maybe because I didn't read the other series *shrug*

I really liked this. I'm a huge fan of The Magicians series, and I'm super glad to have something from Alice's perspective. She's such a strong, complicated character, and this really shows a different side to her power that the original material didn't fully touch upon. I also liked how it seemed to follow the books a bit more than the TV show. Aside from being a great story, the artwork is really nice and lush. I'd definitely recommend this to anyone who's a fan of the series because it's a wonderful addition to the story.

Proof that the whole series should probably have been written from Alice’s point of view. (Actually no, I want one from each POV. Especially Josh.)
Thanks to Archaia for the ARC at BEA 2019!
I've never read or watched The Magicians, although a good friend of mine has been bugging me to for a while. I grabbed this because of him. I loved it. The artwork is amazing, the story it tells is incredibly well done and I'm now hooked on the greater universe. It is a standalone story within The Magicians broader storyarch, but it does a solid job setting up the world and giving us great characters, great dialogue, and a powerful message about growing up and heartbreak. Highly reccomend, checking out the rest of the series ASAP!
