I hate the trilogy. Like, could not stand it. But this actually works. I think Grossman's writing might just work better in a graphic novel or comic format. He barely has any dialogue and there are a lot of weird time skips that made the first book read like a wikipedia article, but this worked much better. Although this did make me realize how much of an obsession he has with writing naked people.

If you want to know how things go down in the Magicians books as opposed to the TV series, I would recommend Alice's Story before I recommended the original prose books.

Meh. If you’ve seen the first season of the show, you won’t really get any new insight into the plot by seeing it from Alice’s perspective.

This is not quite what I expected of Alice's Story, as it's titled. I was hoping for more new things in here that I hadn't seen before, and unfortunately except for the last few pages, this is essentially just [b:The Magicians|6101718|The Magicians (The Magicians, #1)|Lev Grossman|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1313772941l/6101718._SY75_.jpg|6278977] beat for beat in graphic novel format with Alice as the narrator. It's just the first book all over again up until the fight with the Beast and what happens to Alice then.

I was hoping a lot of things. Maybe more backstory on Alice and Charlie (there was a little, but not nearly enough,) maybe more of Alice as a niffin and what she did during that time while the others were off saving Fillory. There was so much this could have done and instead it just told me a story that I already knew in a different format. And it reminded me of why I hated Q in the first book of the trilogy, which is not something I love to be reminded of, especially absent of his character arc throughout the entire trilogy, which makes him tolerable and then close to likable by the end.

I mean, I liked some of the artwork, especially in the Fillory scenes, but this isn't really anything special unless you haven't read the original books. And I'm not 100% convinced it would work for someone who hasn't read those books, either. I'm not quite sure who this was written for.

I did like it, mostly for the art, and some of the references that I caught. I'm not sure who I would recommend it to though, or if I even would.

I read the original The Magicians before it was in paperback. We even chose it as our One Summer, One Book title for the community that year. I think about this graphic novel the same way i felt about that book: boring!!!!! Maybe I would like the TV show more? Alice is trying to get into the magical university, which she does. Then she gets to skip part of her first year. It just goes nowhere and does nothing for this reader.

I really enjoyed this graphic novel, which shows the events of Lev Grossman's novel The Magicians from the POV of character Alice Quinn. If you're familiar with the book, you'll be fascinated by this new take on the story, starting with Alice's arrival at Brakebills and culminating with the thoughts and experiences of the quasi-Alice she becomes at the end of the novel. The artwork of the graphic novel allows for readers to literally see how other readers imagined that characters and the places and the events of the original, and the book overall is a great addition to any Magicians' fan's library.

Alice deserved better. I forgot how almost everyone in this series is a big bag of dicks. The art is very fitting and helped me remember some of the parts of these books I really enjoyed.

Hmm, not sure I like the art. Which is sad because the cover page and intro art is amazing, love the bee, key and gear pattern. Can I get that in wallpaper?
Um, did they just paraphrase the Cheshire Cat from Alice in Wonderland?
Hahaha, the cat exam questions.
Alice’s inner monologue is growing on me. Even though I’m not sure I like her as a character.
The housemates in 3rd year are amazing.
This is a grown up Narnia, right?!
Maybe don’t drink while reading, giggle snort: “‘That ridge over there is positively screaming to be planted with pinot grapes, don’t you think?’
‘My god, man. You have to consider the terroir. For all you know you’d end up with a vintage that turned people into capybaras.’”
Wait, faceless man without a bowler hat?
I still don’t love the art but it kinda grows on you.
5 stars for story but 3 stars for art. 4 stars total.

This will be a nice add on for fans of The Magicians. The art is really lovely and it was great seeing things as described in the book. It didn't really add anything to new to the story but it still felt nice to revisit Brakebills

Really cool to see Alice's side of The Magicians. It made me excited to reread the books, but it also added an extra layer of depth to the narrative.
