Kate takes leave from Ohio to go to Pennsylvania to help a childhood friend, her first love, beat a murder rap for an 18 year old murder. As usual she’s the subject of some violent persuasion by the real murderer and the local police are totally uncooperative and aren’t even considering other suspects. It’s an uphill battle that only Kate can handle given her unrelenting patience and persistence. I found the ending a little excessive in terms of come to Jesus moments.

Ignore the cheesy cover. I love Linda Castillo's books. More gentle thrillers - less gore/graphic details and such - without sacrificing a good mystery. Usually set in Ohio and Anish adjacent, you'll recognize places/towns. They are a good read with a compelling Chief of Police at the center.

When I'm looking for a good, solid thriller, Linda Castillo is a go-to.

I love Kate and her adventures but I felt like this one was really slow to start. I thought it was slow and missed having the other characters in the book.

I always enjoy the Kate Burkholder books...this one was a bit different as it took place in a new town and Kate technically was not acting as police chief. I marked it down a star, though, because while the place and people were different, the plot is still always the same. 3.5 stars rounded up for this story.

The Hidden One by Linda Castillo is one of the most well written mysteries I’ve read in a while. I was a little hesitant about whether or not I would know what was going on as this is book 14 in a series of which I have read none, but once I got into the story, I found myself immersed in it and realized it didn’t necessarily matter as there was enough flashback and description of characters to understand what you needed to.
Kate Burkholder is chief of police in a small town in Ohio. She used to be Amish but left when she was 18 as she realized it wasn’t a fit for her. In The Hidden One, she is welcomed back to an Amish community to assist in solving a decade old murder of an Amish bishop. Her first love is the one who stands accused and she must fight for him like she hadn’t before. This one is so well written and now I am looking forward to eventually reading the rest of the series.
Thank you to Netgalley and Mintoaur Books for the opportunity to read this in exchange for my honest opinion.
