I listened to this novella because my library only has the audiobook. I loved every minute, esp the author's note afterward. William Kent Krueger is amazing!

I love a good WKK story. This shorty went quickly, so not much time spent with the characters. It's only available in audio book, so charge your buds.
I liked the story, and the characters, while typically typecast, were enjoyable. Much of this due to JD Jackson's wonderful narration.

A few years ago, we were affected by flooding and watched as others lost homes, farms and businesses. We suffered no loss, but with road closures and flooding, my husband worked from home for almost three months that summer. This story immediately made me think of that, and I was curious to learn more about the great flood.
The story that unfolds was unusual, brilliantly written and thought provoking. First, we have four men, all convicts, who agree to cross the river to Ballymore, an ancestral home protected by a high, circular levee. Upon arriving, they find that despite the dangers, some members of the household won’t leave. We see this all the time with natural disasters where people refuse to abandon their homestead.
A plan is devised to save the weakened levee. The tale held me spellbound as I waited to see if their plan would work and who would survive. This story is more than man verse nature and I devoured it in a single sitting. It’s a story that will stay with me.
Delivered an insightful look into the lives of those faced with disaster and those brave enough to save the lives of strangers.
Jackson was the perfect choice to narrate this title. From the characters to his pacing and tones, he brought this story and its characters to life. I encourage you to listen to the author’s notes at the end. It was well worth it and added insight.

I feel like a novella is hard because you don't have as much space to define the characters. While I found the premise exciting during the entirety of the book, there were too many characters to get a feel for, which left a hole.

The Levee by William Kent Krueger
Narrated by J.D. Jackson
I always enjoy Krueger's work and this novella is interesting for what is here. In fact, Krueger's afterword makes the story even more interesting. But I do think it would have worked better for me as a full length story where we could have learned more about the characters I liked (phooey on the ones I didn't like). I wanted to know more about so many of them, they were interesting but this tiny look at a critical point of time in their lives just wasn't enough for me. Still, I'm glad I finally listened to this audiobook, I've had it on my TBR list for a while and it's thanks to Goodreads members reminding of this book that I finally listened to the audiobook.
Thanks to my library and Libby for this audiobook.

This book was refined and recorded some 50 years after originally being written. Listening to it is very emotional, within such a short story you come to understand each and every character and their motivations. It takes a wonderful writer to transport readers like that.
Nice, well-paced novella. In 4 hours the author develops the characters and plots a storyline with tension.
