There was so much exposition I just couldn’t get into it. I really wanted to. It was interesting I was just struggling to wade through the exposition.

A difficult book initially due to the dense style; however, it's definitely worth the effort. Rushdie writes beautifully and there are some amazing structural sleights of hand in the story.

perhaps unfair of me to review it like this, but I got very bored because the writing style was very repetitive, which was part of the bit (narrator as a long winded narcissist). like listening to a drunk old guy at the bar who really did have a fascinating life but you have to translate everything he says to create your own timeline and de-hyperbolize the main points. 'shame' was so good that I think that this just couldn't hold on direct comparison of a back to back read.

An extraordinary literary achievement. Should be on everyone's "Must Read" list.
