“Sunflower’s an ocean. Check out the world she’s flooded.”
A small town drive-in, a forbidden crush, a monster stepping out of a storm. “Light” brought Piper’s big, bold dream to fruition, riding a high of teenage fluster and nightmarish enthusiasm. The horrific circumstances that unfold are cut with the unique camaraderie of being a queer teen in the sticks. But then there’s just…more horrific circumstances right after. The name of the game is “belonging” and sometimes we lose.
There was so much going on and the style fought the plot. As if writing in one of her translucent, stained glass labyrinths: we can almost see the story but it’s drowned in noise. A discordant narrative works really well in horror as it adds to chaos and calamity but there’s gotta be some amount of clarity for guidance.
3/5 A rad concept underneath…everything else.

i'll admit when i started this book i was skeptical of the direction it was going in and felt like it was introducing too many sporadic concepts to be a strong horror novel HOWEVER the last third of this book made me eat my fucking words. not only did Piper tie everything together, but she managed to do it with such a strong emotional core that made me want to wash my mouth out to take back all my early complaints. i was also impressed by Piper's imagery and the thing that stood out the most throughout this book was how transported it made me feel. olivia and i were one and the same and everything she experienced was described in a way that cut deep into my brain.
Sehr schade.

So far, my journey into the horror genre has been incredible, and "A Light Most Hateful" is a powerful reminder of why it has been so. Hailey Piper has rapidly become a noteworthy name in the genre, but due to my tbr, I hadn't had the opportunity to explore her work until I got my hands on an ARC of this book.
Even weeks after finishing the book, the vivid images and the delight I experienced through Hailey's prose are still fresh in my mind. The book offers a complete cosmic horror experience, brimming with rage, emotion, and scenes that cut right through one's conception of reality. It keeps you on the edge of your seat, trying to untangle the mysteries while also acknowledging that there may be no explanation at all.
For me, it's an instant 5-star read, a story that not only made me question the world I live in and its horrors but also challenged the foundations of my own reality.

I am thinking I don’t gel well with this authors writing style. I read Cruel Angels past sundown and had no idea what was going on for the second half and this was exactly the same. The first half had me to intrigued but by the second half I was just confused. There was so much going on, so many profound lessons and realisations and just got lost in it all. I liked the characters in the beginning but as it went on I like them less and I don’t know… I’m interest in Queen of Teeth so I am willing to try again but it’s so annoying that I just don’t like the two I’ve read as they both have amazing premises and I love the representation in these books
