Be More Chill: 3 1/2 stars

I am a book freak. When I become friends with someone, or date someone, or really just meet anybody new, I obviously have to talk books with them. I told my previous boyfriend that my favorite author is John Green, and he told me his is Ned Vizzini. I had never heard of Vizzini, and for some reason just didn't do any research on the guy. However, after forcing my then-boyfriend to read The Fault in Our Stars, he asked me to read It's Kind of a Funny Story. I really liked it, and ended up reading Vizzini's other book, Teen Angst? Naaah.... Finally, a few days ago, my ex got around to lending me this novel (and hopefully The Other Normals is next *hint hint* *cough cough*).

So anyway, on to my actual review. Be More Chill was very interesting, and definitely a concept I hadn't ever considered. A supercomputer pill to be ingested with Mountain Dew that can give you the answers to everything? Heck, sign me up. Maybe then I can get an ACT score that gets me free college or something.

It was easy for me to relate to Jeremy - I am, in fact, a total loser. I've gotten a little better with the whole social aspect recently, but still, I am a complete nerd, and I often wish I had an intelligent voice in my head directing me what to say and not-say (can't say I'd particularly enjoy Keanu Reeves' voice in there, but eh).

I really like Vizzini's writing style, and how direct and open it is. I like that he can write about masturbating and pissing and vomiting and fucking and cursing and everything in between so casually. I like that he doesn't censor things.

When I found out about Vizzini's death, I was devastated. It was sad to think that this talented man was gone, and I wouldn't be reading anything newly published from him ever again. My ex was even more upset...and it hurts to know that his favorite author won't be writing anymore books. (John Green, please stay alive for me)

Rest in peace, Vizzini.

I wanted to read this book after having listened to the musical far too many times(Have not seen the musical besides bits and pieces on Youtube), and I wanted to know where the characters came from. Of course there are many similarities between the book and the musical. Reading the book definitely gave me some more context for the musical and an understanding of why the did certain things in the musical. I do favor the musical but I have had more time and more emotions attached to the musical.
