I put off reading this book for a while, oh my gosh big mistake. Absolutely fantastic horror novel, if you like isolation horror, female narratives, and the horrors of domestic life; this one is for you.

4/5! Kept me intrigued and at the edge of my seat! Really enjoyed this book. Towards the end it did slow a little which was annoying the characters had no sense of urgency towards the end!!

3.5 stars

Mattie lives in fear. She lives in a secluded cabin atop a mountain with her abusive, controlling husband who is constantly denying her memories from when she was a child. When a creature starts to leave impossible-seeming tracks around their cabin, people are led to the mountain for the first time, and Mattie might have found a way out.

One of my favorite parts of exploring horror books is you don't know what type of horror you're going to get until you're reading it, and this had a lot of different elements I liked. There's the monster element, the slasher/killer element, and the past timeline of Mattie recalling the trauma of her past. Henry doesn't hold back from the stakes or the gore in a way that makes the situation feel real. I can't say much more about this book without delving into spoilers, but the one letdown for me was the number of loose ends. I was not expecting every single thing to be answered, especially in a monster horror, but I would have preferred if we had either real-life or supernatural plots answered.

Overall, this was a fun horror that I didn't want to stop listening to. I think the ending could have had more answers, but I look forward to picking up future titles from this author.

I wish I liked the main character better. The inner monologue made her seem more weak and honestly whiney than she really was.
I also would have liked more about the mysterious creature roaming the woods.

What a creepy book! This was definitely a solid horror/thriller that kept me on my toes. Mattie lives on the mountain with her husband and has been there for as long as she can remember. Alone, isolated, and in constant fear of making her husband upset. On her way to check the traps one day, Mattie finds a the body of a dead fox, which soon spirals into a deadly chase with this new monster on the mountain that they’ve never seen or heard until now. When three strangers show up to look for this new creature, they soon end up in a race against time, fearing not only the monster, but her husband’s anger as well. I enjoyed the audiobook for this one and flew through it! This was a quick read for me and I enjoyed the creepy nature of this book.

What a cool mix of two otherwise separate genres of horror! And though some „smoking guns“ where quite obvious, just like in any good horror movie, it was still effective and satisfying seeing them go off! Not to mention the surprising moments you don’t see coming!
