held my attention much better than the first, the writing and grammar improved a lot. the cliffhanger made me want to yeet this across the room
I don’t care what happens anymore. Couldn’t finish it. Don’t even want to see if they get back together. Sick of the toxic relationship getting romanticized.

I will admit beginning this review that I did watch the After film series before reading the novels and that I listened to the audiobook. My first complaint is listening to the last chapter of the first novel being read by the film actor it is then difficult to love the male voice in the audiobook and find it extremely disappointing. Especially when a lot of the more “romantic elements” are seen through this persons perspective. However I cannot deny how unbelievably compelling this book in the series was. The whole thing was heavy and very hard to read at times. I know that eventually things will change even more within the story, but for right now it felt very dark. I am understanding the idea of character development and the pain of losing being a very dominant theme throughout the whole second novel. Losing trust, losing your innocence as a young child, and losing yourself in the anger that comes from being betrayed by the people who are supposed to love you. I loved how both characters are portrayed as immature and insecure because let’s be honest most college kids are. You have a young women who has been oppressed by a verballly abusive parent and is finding her voice and gaining a confidence she hasn’t had before. She has been through humiliation and has gained her bravery. She isn’t so quick to believe all the bullshit that has kept her from living her life and not the life planned out for her. Yet because she is so young and sheltered she doesn’t understand how to cope with conflict in relationships and lashes out in very destructive ways. Then you have this incredibly possessive and broken boy who in his own really messed up way; really loves her irrevocably. He has never let anyone truly love him in his life after being traumatized and so in return, he doesn’t know how to love anybody else. He wants desperately to be what she needs, but he has never been held accountable long enough in his life thus far and in my opinion truly need mental health support. You see the changes that they are making in one another both good and incredibly bad. Their relationship is in no way romantic or healthy but it is realistic and I truly believe that they need each other. I look forward to reading more about them because they are very interesting to read about even if it breaks my heart constantly.
i love/hate this series so much. Is it dramatic? yes. Do I love every second? also yes.

I love the way the author really makes you feel like you are there in the moment! The little details about the surroundings or the facaial expressions of the characters really help to put things into a better perspective. I now know that I FUCKING HATE Hardin, i think he is such an asshole but at the same time i can see why tessa loves him so much because when he has his SMALL moments of sweetness its stands out that much more as a contrast for his asshole moments. Yes this relationship technically is toxic but its the kind of toxic that is believable and shows that it can eventually become fully healthy once he learns how to be more kind and she learns to be more patient and maybe not to jump to negative conclusions so quick about him. The love between them seems believable . Overall i would definitely read this again.
