Lets just say her writing has improved since her first book.

I found this book in the only bookstore (school supplies store, really) in town. Since I'm a cheapskate, I headed down to the old books shelf, and to my surprise, I found a familiar writer. I rarely buy paperbacks/hardcopies and mostly read virtually, so this is one of the special reading moments I've had in a while.

So, the story is set in 1896 Yukon Territory, a very scenic land that attracts a lot of miners. Our hero with a very fitting name is called 'Stone Man', who owns a trading post and has a passion for photography. To have more time for his hobby, he posted advertisements for help in his business, and by that came Devon O'Shea, who is surprisingly...a lady.

The book is such a pageturner that I finished it on a busy day. There were historical inaccuracies, like the whole town with a priest no less, unbothered with an unmarried man and woman, sharing a tent and one bed together–as business partners. But despite all that, and the 'eager to be finished' ending, I really enjoyed this book, much as all the books I read of hers.

Hannah’s 1st book- a heartwarming, cheesy romance story. It was a fun read and had me laughing out loud at the main characters. The ending is predictable and it really is strictly a romance novel. I do think the characters’ pasts should’ve been developed way more to add more depth to not only the characters but their relationship too.

A Handful of Heaven is Kristin Hannah's debut novel, and after reading a few of her newer books, it was obvious to me. She has come a long way! Set in the winter/spring of 1896 in the Yukon Territory of Alaskan wilderness, Devon applies to become a partner at a trading post for Stone Man. Except Devon was picturing a city, and ends up in a tent city out in the sticks! Stone Man wants nothing to do with Devon, because he was expecting a HE and got a SHE instead, and everyone knows, Alaskan gold mining towns are no place for ladies (unless you're a whore, of course) and Devon is surely a lady. The two bicker and fight and obviously fall in love, but both are too stubborn to tell the other how they feel. Made me want to reach thru the pages and shake them to be perfectly honest. Of course, it wouldn't be a great romance without the trials and tribulations, so no surprise we got a happy ending. Not bad, but not her best by far. Solid 3 stars.
