An intense and devastating book that I could not put down. I feel Picoult approached this topic with grace, compassion, and understanding for all sides. Beautifully written.

I usually love Jodi Picoult and this book was no different. I love the way the characters developed and how their backstories played into there current characteristics and choices. Everyone has a story and just when you assume someone is the villain, you understand that they are taunted by their own villains. Perspective is a crazy thing.

So well written in a way that challenges my prior beliefs. Truly enraging the way this reflects real life events so well. Something that I found very poignant was the way the book tried to make you sympathize with the shooter, as if any amount of bullying could make these heinous acts warranted. To me it felt like it mirrored the way the media tends to frame school shooters in light of what they could have been or their potential rather than digging into the crime that has no explanation that is good enough.

Powerful and surprising,  with a twist at the end. Picoult takes us into a school shooting,  the events leading up to it and the aftermath. This brought up a lot of feelings about bullying,  parenting,  education,  and guns in a way that defies the politics and focuses on people. There are no winners,  only survivors,  and a community forever scarred and changed. The equal focus on the high schoolers, parents, police, and lawyers highlighted the humanity of all the characters and reminded me that we all contribute to the environment that creates tragedy.
