I used to like Campion a lot, these days I find these books a bit tedious. No real mystery to get stuck into in this one, just a load of capers with very little motivation. Some nice scenes and tricks but as a whole it just didn't add up to anything interesting.

This is a highly improbable, but extremely British and entertaining, mystery. Albert Campion and his stalwart associates must locate the lost regalia of the kingdom of Averna: a small, strategically located and petroleum-rich piece of the British Empire. Along the way they attract assassins, would-be necromancers, and a bevy of bizarre locals. Albert Campion is an amusing detective; he cultivates an air of affable stupidity, until he is called upon to exercise his formidable hidden wit.

Albert Campion has been tasked with making sure that the Pontisbright family is able to reclaim their title. To that end, he tries to travel incognito. It doesn't really work (for being someone who is supposed to be discreet, he is fairly recognizable). Too bad there is someone else after the proof of the Pontisbrights legitimacy and they seem to want to stop at nothing.
The first book with Amanda, I actually liked the TV episode a little better but still a good book.
