I liked the first book much more than this one, but I did like the focus this book had on the characters it did. It allowed the reader to learn and get to know more of the characters we love from the show.
I don't quite know why I didn't seem to enjoy this one as much, maybe because it focused more on the other people Jenny knew and less on herself...?
None the less, I did seriously enjoy this book. And I would recommend it for sure.

I enjoyed this a lot less than the first book. The first book is strongly built on Worth's own experiences as a nurse and a midwife, and because it is autobiographical I could forgive some of the misgivings in the writing. It is clear that not everything that was written here could possibly be true to life. A lot of the things that happen especially in the first part of the book are things that I sincerely doubt would've been told to the author at the time, and some conversations she never could've heard or even gotten second hand accounts of. For this reason this book reads more like fiction and I dislike her writing style as such.
In the third part of the book Worth goes back to describing her own experience and her friendship with a lonely old man. His story is tragic and beautiful, and here Worth gets back on track with her storytelling. The second star goes for the third part alone.

This story is heart-wrenching, honest, brutal, colorful, joyful, poignant, hopeful, and rich. I am grateful for every word, and the author's ability to tell stories like these.

The stories in this second Jennifer Worth memoir are different from the first. They are short story length stories centered around specific things (the workhouse) or people (Sister Monica Joan, Mr Collett). I still enjoyed her writing immensely and I think that she definitely meets what seems to be her objective--to pay homage to those who survived life in less than ideal and trying times in London. She sure reminds me to be endlessly grateful for the blessed life I live!!
