This is such a sad book. History is filled with events like the ones related by this book, sure, but that doesn't make them less terrible and painful.
Workhouses were created as a solution for those who were immersed in poverty, well-intentioned but poorly run, managed, mostly, by petty tyrants who enjoyed their power over the lost souls that ended under their 'care' ~sighs~
This book is different from the previous one, it tells us about the lives of some of the people the author comes across while at Nonatus House. These are stories filled with hardship and pain but also hope and love. Many are truly sad but they are never hopeless.
And we also come back to Sister Monica Joan, who seems to have such a great influence on the author, and, tbh, it's always great to hear about her :D
The narration is great, too.
A very good book, no doubt!

(3.5) Bleak and fascinating, Shadows of the Workhouse paints a vivid portrait of the brutalities of poverty in 20th century London. I decided to pick this one up after watching the show it’s based on. I must say, they captured the voice really well in the television program, but the book isn’t nearly as sentimental. If you find yourself feeling nostalgic for a simpler time while watching the show, just pick up this book and you will soon snap out of it (Though I must admit the show has shocked me in the past).
This sequel in the trilogy doesn’t touch upon midwifery so much as nursing. And though it includes the characters viewers are familiar with, the majority of the book depicts the lives of patients in the community during the worst moments of their lives. And yet I recommend it heartily. Shadows of the Workhouse shares a part of history of which little was written by the people who experienced it.

Great nonfiction book by the author of Call the Midwifes. This book mostly is about people in London left in poverty due to war and the dreadful conditions of poorhouses.
I enjoyed the book, however, I read the book AFTER watching "Call The Midwife" and it was like reading a season from the show. That being said, I like the show and liked the book.

I find this series extremely interesting and it makes me realise how much I take for granted.
