To be honest I am still processing this book and I’ve been going back and forth on my feelings about it.

What I loved: The writing. The characters. I loved them so, so much - except Callum, which I think was the point, and I have mixed feelings on Atlas & Dalton but I think there's more to uncover there. Nico and Libby were my favorite, by far. I also loved the setting. A magical library/secret society? Dark academia vibes? Say no more! There's so many layers in the world & the story which means there's so much more to discover in a re-read.

What fell short: I was definitely expecting a little bit more to happen in the plot. This was very character-driven in my opinion. The ending was confusing and the reveal of the details of the elimination was not shocking at all (am I the only one who thinks this?). There were many points of the book where the academic discussions went a bit over my head, but I think it's because I was trying to read it too fast.

Overall, I’m giving this 4 stars because most of the book was super strong. I will definitely read the next one in the series. There were many points where I said to myself "I love this book" but also many points where I said "but do I?" If you choose to pick it up, which I encourage, I would recommend taking your time with it. I definitely think I would have enjoyed it more that way.

Flat, poorly written character who are SUPER unlikeable. The plot seemed to be going nowhere and after a quick look for spoilers on Reddit, I can confirm that the plot was going nowhere.

This was a mission to get through. I usually love character driven books, but this was a little too character driven, even for me. The plot at this point is just pretentious writing which was great for the first 100 pages, and then you just need more.

I feel like if you're going to write a character driven book, the characters need to be dynamic and their relationships need to be interesting. This barely scratched the surface. I had no idea what motivated these characters. Why were they so driven to stay in this library? What were they learning? What are these classes? How do they feel about each other?.

This was a whole lot of nothing.

Even the beautiful illustrations couldn't make up for the lack of plot.

I just wanted more. But all the pretentious quotes were enough for me to finish the book.
