It just feels nice to hop back into a Murderbot book. It's kind of like checking in on a friend and seeing what shenanigans they've been up to, and I got to see Dr. Mensah and the rest of that crew from the first book again! Throughout the book, Murderbot continues its process of figuring out what it wants and who it is. It also reevaluates its relationships with humans and those that could be considered "friends" (quotes because I'm not sure it's quite ready for those deeper feelings).

"I didn't know what I wanted (I still didn't know what I wanted) and when you're told what to do every second of your existence, change is terrifying." p.128

I think we're all Murderbot. We just want to be left alone with our shows but people keep ruining that dream. I'm glad Wells brought back the original team from All Systems Red to really put an end cap on what was supposed to be a 'conclusion' but I'm glad she decided to continue the series.

THE FEELS OMFG!!! i was secretly hoping murderbot would eventually meet up with dr. mensah again and omg it happened and my heart was pitter pattering. i know it doesn't like the emotions it's feeling, but murderbot's inner monologue about it had me in my feels. i love it and cannot wait to read the full length novel!!

"My organic parts felt quivery, I had shrapnel stuck all over me, but I was still at 83 percent performance reliability. (It's good there's not a separate statistic for my mental performance reliability because I don't think even I would rate it as all that great at the moment.)"

OKAY *this* book is my favorite so far in the series 😭😂

This was sweet for me, in a way we've gone full circle. Because in this book we see Murderbot reunite with the people that kind of started this journey of self-discovery and free will. The first people Murderbot can consider as "friends". And Murderbot has grown so much, even they can see it. Here we see just how human and vulnerable and different Murderbot has gotten, and I can't help but feel proud. Yes, it's still not human and it doesn't like pretending to be human. But it feels things, it goes through emotions and has reactions. It's discovering things it likes, it still likes media and how they make it feel. Murderbot is discovering how it is to be human in some way and I love it 😭 And them not knowing what to do, except watching media? So relatable 😂

Anyway, I just love this installment so much 🥹 It's still action-packed of course, and it's funny, and it just takes you on a ride.

It's Murderbot Diaries' fourth book and I'm devouring it (for a reason - the whole series is so good!). Murderbot has adventured far and wide to shed light on its own past and gather evidence of GrayCris Corporation's crimes, but now, it's time to return to those who this began with.

Ohhoo, what an action-packed story it was - reuniting with old friends, complaining about humans, sarcasm, strange emotions, badass fighting and near death situations. Seriously, I have been waiting for this!
We are back to help out the "first" crew (Dr. Mensah, specifically) and Murderbot, who definitely doesn't care, sure does a lot to help these humans. I was so giddy to see the reunion!
Even though Murderbot itself wasn't sure how to refer to them, ART had already planted the seed that PreservationAux was Murderbot's crew, that these were Murderbot's humans. And they are!

I was having an emotion, and I hate that.

It was fascinating to see Murderbot's internal (emotional) struggles and to see it want to win against GrayCris purely out of spite. (In hindsight, that wasn't a very good idea, but it was successful, so... I'll take that.) That did lead us to some very unfortunate circumstances in which Murderbot almost deleted itself out of existence (I blame it on the wonky risk assessment module), which would have had me sobbing at 3 am. (Guaranteed.) Thankfully, things turned out MUCH better, with everyone intact, but perhaps some were changed and some even a little broken.

It would have been hilarious if I wasn’t about to die. It was still a little hilarious.

Ahh I have mixed feelings. Mostly positive. I love Murderbot. It’s possibly my favorite book character. I love that even though it’s an autistic coded robot (cyborg), it subverts the usual stereotypes of that character. It has a personality, an attitude, emotions, social anxiety, and a special interest. I relate strongly to Murderbot and I just love it so much.

This book especially made me ship Murderbot and Mensah, though I’m still waiting for the whole ownership thing to be resolved…

The thing that has me conflicted is the very tech heavy language. This is a me issue, and has been an issue for me with every book so far. My (likely adhd) brain really struggles to focus when a book has a difficult writing style or uses a lot of terms I don’t understand. I will just automatically start daydreaming or drifting off into some random thought without wanting to. It’s like it’s too much effort to read through all the confusing stuff so my focus just gives up. This type of book requires more focus than I have. I’m still gonna continue in the series, because I love Murderbot and the other characters too much not to, but every book just has me wishing it were written in a way that was more compatible with my brain.

Quotes:

“How humans decide what to do with their arms on a second-by-second basis, I still have no idea.”
Me neither, Murderbot.

“SecUnits are never allowed to sit down or use human furniture whether on or off duty, so I sat in one of the chairs and put my feet on the table. Then I took my feet off the table because it wasn’t comfortable.”

“I was in my best casual pose.”

“But I was the only one here, so I braced myself and made the ultimate sacrifice. “Uh, you can hug me if you need to.””

(“I don’t want to be a pet robot.”
“I don’t think anyone wants that.”
That was Gurathin. I don’t like him. “I don’t like you.”
“I know.”
He sounded like he thought it was funny. “That is not funny.”
“I’m going to mark your cognition level at fifty-five percent.”
“Fuck you.”
“Let’s make that sixty percent.”

“The ship didn’t have any cameras so I couldn’t see anybody. No, wait, I could use my eyes.”
