Wow this book was something else, it drew you in from the start, the detail in it is amazing, one minute you feel like you are in Lilac's shoes the next in Toby's, I can usually tell what is going to happen next in a book before it happens, but not with this book, it had me guessing all the way through.

For as long as he can remember, Toby was in love with the girl that lives opposite him, the one he watched from his bedroom window behind the curtains, he wanted to protect her, love her, get arrested for her.

The only boy that Lilac trusted was the boy who lived opposite, with his black rimmed glasses, and protective nature, she knew when he was close and felt alive, Toby made her feel like she could do anything, when she needed him he was there.

I don't want to give any spoilers away as you really, really need to read this book, feel the emotion, the heart-warming and heartbreak all in one, follow their journey from childhood to adulthood. Both their families had secrets that could break them all, how do they cope and come back from it?

5 amazing stars for this book, Victoria never fails to draw you into her books, leaving you wanting more. This is a must read!

This story is unlike anything else I have ever read! Toby's devotion and love even at such a young age is remarkable. This was the first book I have read of Victoria's and I feel like I started we with the best one! Amazing story and flow and great character development you can really get a sense of who each character is not just Lilac and Toby but even the secondary characters! Great read see for yourself!

A Girl Like Lilac was everything I knew it would be and MORE. I'm so happy that THIS book was my first Victoria L James read.

AGLL was the kind of YA I wish there were more of. The story was filled with so much REALNESS. From the story to the characters. I can't tell you how much I LOVED Lilac and Toby. Their love was the kind that had me swooning and caused heart palpitations.

A Girl Like Lilac has become one of my FAVORITE books of the YEAR. Even though this was my first book by this author, it's no way the last.

This was my first book by this author and its safe to say it won't be my last - especially if Mason gets his own book! Toby was everything I love in a book boyfriend, gorgeous, strong, loving, funny, broody, and willing to do literally anything to protect the ones he loves. Lilac was another great character, a bit out there, strong, kickass! Their relationship was anything but easy but boy did it make for one hell of a story!

First book that I’ve read from Ms. James and boy what a story! A beautiful coming of age tale that had my heart and mind wrapped up in Lilac and Toby’s world. Young love shouldn’t be dismissed and the connection that these two characters had, was magical. The alluring words flowed with ease and I felt every emotion that the characters encountered and more. So wrapped up in this story, I literally wanted to hibernate with my kindle until the very last page.

This isn't my first read by VLJ - I've read her MC series so had an idea of her syle of writing, but being YA I knew this would be different.

Lilac Clarke - happy go lucky, carefree and colourful. The kind of girl you wish to be yourself, and be friends with. Toby Hunter - troubled, secretive, and hides in the shadows. The kind of guy you should avoid, but can't help but have a soft spot for.

Without going into too much detail and giving too much away (as I do tend to ramble sometimes!), I will say that this story, as with VLJ's others, captured my heart for a number of reasons.

A story of beauty, a story of torment. Feeling the love, feeling the hate. Keeping secrets, and setting them free. Holding out for our one true love. No matter what.

Yet again, it was a rollercoaster of emotion for me, and my eyes *may* have leaked a little. A Girl Like Lilac has earned its rightful place in my top 10 so far of the year.

This was uneven. And you're always gonna lose me a bit with "all bad guys are rapists" cliche.

And listing it as a second chance romance is misleading.
