Muddy prose, i don't wanna read a sentence and just get the gist of it instead of actually understanding what it means. Lots of characters and they're all quirky and have their own secrets, its just too much to care. It does have similar vibes to Pratchett and Alice in Wonderland, so there's that.

I thought it tedious, though I really wanted to like it. I'm afraid I gave up a third of the way through. Perhaps I am just not a fantasy fiction reader ...
Definitely for fans of Gormenghast and Jonathan Strange and Mr Burrell. Sadly too many characters bogged down the plot.
Verdict: Most fun I've had reading in a good while. Might have to jump right into the sequel.
It would be useless to attempt a plot summary but I can confirm this is definitely the spiritual successor to Gormenghast. I've seen reviewers also cite Harry Potter and, while I can see why, I'm detecting stronger notes of Discworld. For all that, Rotherweird still manages to be utterly original. I didn't want it to end so I think it's off to Wyntertide for me.

This premise and a large part of its execution are right up my street. There is a lot I loved but it didn't quite come together in the end for me.
As a lover of fantasy, history, mythology, and the history of science, I had a great time. However, in particular, the scattering of "tell, don't show" moments felt jarring in a book which mostly holds its cards close. A little more bite would have been appreciated given the set up, and gestures at the treatment of women by powerful men.
Regardless the art by Sasha Laika is great.

Look I honestly couldn't tell you what the hell was going on in this book but it was compelling and enjoyable.
Slow and rambling, got 60 pages without anything much of consequence happening.
