Hard to get into, but a wonderfully conplex story once you get used to all the characters. Way better on a re-read!

That's the purest essence of strangeness and this weird part of british fantasy I truly adore.

I loved every page of this tale, each character and each story. The plot is so peculiar yet so well written that you actually want to believe that somewhere there is Rotherweird, a city so closed yet so opened, with all those bizzare residents from both sides.

Pardon my lack of words, but I'm so amazed that I can't find any which would give back the genius of it.

Couldn’t get into it. I found the writing style jumpy and all over the place. I wanted to give it a chance but ended up avoided reading so abandoned it pretty early.

ROTHERWEIRD has been on my to-read list for awhile, and I’m glad I finally moved it to the front of the line. A truly unique and engaging novel that is part faux-history, part Gaiman-esque contemporary fantasy and 100% English.

“Whimsical” is the word that keeps coming to mind. I got the same feeling from Gaiman’s STARDUST. The books share a certain timelessness.

I hate to say it but this was such a slog to get through. The timeline was all over the place and barely made sense, and I was confused from start to finish. I would read whole pages or chapters and reflect afterwards that I had no idea what just happened - it constantly felt like I was missing some vital bit of context. Even after the death of some main characters, I felt nothing and didn’t even realise they’d died at first.

There were too many characters to keep track of, even with the extensive character list at the beginning, and about 20 story lines happening at one time. The writing was a challenge to get through and overall it just was not a fun time.

I did like the basis of the story and the overall plot (or the bits that I did manage to understand at least), but it just took so much concentration to take it in. I took a bit of a break from reading the book mid way through so thought that might explain my confusion, but looking at some other reviews, it might not just be my reading habits that made me feel that way!

I highly doubt I’ll be returning for the other books in the series unfortunately. Here’s a lesson to listen to the reviews beforehand maybe!

Over-written and convoluted. Rotherweird reads like a second-year uni student trying to truss up their under-researched paper by replacing every tenth word with the longest, most unnecessary synonym from an online thesaurus.
I have also realised that reading the phrase "the fair sex" makes me taste last night's dinner - an experience preferable to finishing this book.

If a book needs the last chapter to explain what has happened so far in the story, in my opinion that book is in trouble.
I couldn't tell majority of characters apart so similar they were. The whole plot so intricate that half of time I wasn't sure what was happening and especially why.
I had high hopes for it as the premise is rather intriguing but alas.
