You all know I’m a sucker for short-stories that build upon an already established world! Getting to know Luke and Thalia more intimately in the first story adds some substantial backstory to both their characters. The Percabeth date in the second is what we all needed. The Lost Hero trio is back in a cute holiday story (which is good if you ignore Rick’s timeline screw up #ClassicRick). And Haley Riordan’s debut writing the Son of Magic short story is iconic and dark. Fans of PJO and HOO definitely need to read The Demigod Diaries for a deeper dive into the Rick Riordan universe and to get some pressing questions answered!

This was a good addition to the Percy Jackson universe and I enjoyed learning more about my favourite characters. But, I do think this book was entirely necessary to the series and whilst it did set up some background info, I don’t think you would actually miss out on not reading this book. I did enjoy reading a story about new characters written by Rick’s son Haley. It was something different and I enjoyed that story the most I think. I do like the different activities within the diary as it separates the stories and adds a bit of fun. Overall, it’s a good companion book, but not necessary to read to understand the series.
