This book starts off wonderfully creepy. Then somehow blends into a story about a sadist. Then it becomes a murder mystery. Then you're reading about a psychopath. Then the book wraps up as a campy ghost story. The transition was seamless. But you'd notice, for instance, that the book wasn't creepy anymore. Bummer the ending was so campy. Wonderfully creepy

This book truly terrified me. I could feel the goosebumps rise on my arms and neck as I read, and a few times even wanted to cry out. I had to put it down a few times to calm myself before plunging on. It's a classic ghost story about a haunted house that really highlights the timeless theme of things that go bump in the night, or in this case: swish-thwack!

Pleasantly surprised by this!
It did take me a while to get into and i resulted in listening to the audio
That was the best decision for me as i soon became invested!

It is your typical haunted house story but that is one of my favourite horror tropes.
Some of the images it put in my head were a little hard to listen to (regarding children)
Glad i persevered and finish!

I haven't read a horror book for a long while and this is a good one to get back into. It's always a sign of a good horror book when I have to read it with lots of light and people around me. I have forgotten how much I enjoy JH's book. I have always preferred his books than Stephen King's. Herbert's books just must more accessible and really sent shiver down my spine.

I was severely disappointed with this one. Full of characters who, despite being walking cliches, were incredibly lifeless. The plot would probably work as an insomnia cure, though.
