It's thrilling and exciting and I enjoyed reading it. Some of the writing style did grate slightly, with the constant reminders that local characters were speaking in a Devonshire accent. Not a great work of literature but enjoyable all the same.
An amazing read, hooked from the start, the tv adaptation got me interested in it, but the book was so much better, truly gripping!
This is a classic horror tale from James Herbert (old haunted house, new family in residence) but I'm still not sure if I liked it or not. Despite some unnerving occurrences the family Caleigh are determined to stay put when most sane individuals would have packed up and run for the hills!
It was very a 'descriptive' book but maybe too much, the imagination has to have room to run, and I don't like every tiny detail spelling out for me, but that could be personal preference.
The story could have easily been 100 pages shorter and not lost any of its impact.

HacĂa tiempo que no pasaba miedo con un libro de terror. Muy recomendable.
I wasn't sure I was going to be able to finish this, but somehow I was able to push through and turn that last page.
It's been a few years now, but I watched the BBC miniseries and remember it had creeped me out so I was really looking forward to reading this. Also I was prepared for some things*
I had a lot of trouble getting into this. It was SO repetitive and went into detail about shit I didn't care about. Gabe (+ his daughter) constantly correcting American vs British terms really got on my nerves. I was also bothered that Herbert had to describe almost all the female mains' breast size, sometimes multiple times.

*I knew the child abuse was coming. I was NOT prepared for:
-The antisemitism
-Flagellation
-The repeated statutory rape of a 12 YEAR OLD BOY
-The same boy (later) wondering why Cribbens didn't also sexually abuse him
-How Susan was treated and punished for getting her first period
-The mutilation of a 5 YEAR OLD BOY
So I've never actually thrown a book across the room before. This one got thrown. Next I'd like to throw it into a fire.

Spooky all the way through, things that ho bump in the night, brilliant read, keeps you on the edge of your seat all the way.
Sad and haunting story that combines very real feelings of grief with a ghostly story that will break your heart.
