I really enjoyed this novel. Its one of the only I've read that actually gives me chills and makes me feel unsettled.

David Rintoul, who did a masterful job narrating The Devil's Detective, narrates The Secret of Crickley Hall by James Herbert. He does a wonderful job with all the accents, genders, and living/dead characters. I find him to be a dependable narrator. If he narrates a book, it will be enjoyable to listen to. In this case, I would not listen to this one at night if I am fighting insomnia. It sucked me in quickly and I am sure it will do the same on the second listen.
Crickley Hall is not your normal haunted house. It was built in the 1800's. It is an ugly house, large and block-like. It does not have the long history of haunting that most classic haunting stories have. It does have a history of flooding. All of Crickley Hall's characteristics come together when a family, grieving for the loss of their son less than a year ago, move in for a few months. Their lost son is literally lost, he disappeared and no clue or body has turned up. This is a long story, 18 hours. The story builds until things start to happen with very moments of rest in-between.
I recommend The Secret of Crickley Hall. There is something that feels like an older and classic story.

This book trotted such outrageous cliches I wondered if Herbert was pulling the readers leg, like he had the Horror Cliche Checklist and needed to hit every one. Compared to other great Herbert books this novel provided a real WTF experience.

It took me a long while to get through this book, a too long while.
There wasn't a whole load of suspense packed into its 600 pages, and I believe it would have been the same or an even better book had it been 400 or less.
A slog of a book with characters that are fairly relatable, however definitely not worth the 600 page toil.

I wouldn’t really call this horror, it sets up as a haunted house but becomes very fantastical. There are certainly some parts that are horrific but the ending is really well done.

Fue una mala idea hacer relectura de este libro… ahora solo soy consciente que hay muchas cosas que no funcionan. (Poderes extrasensoriales, telepatía, además usar múltiples situaciones de abuso para respaldar una historia de miedo). Ahora lo encuentro tan morboso y perverso, que entiendo porque se me olvidó.
Primero el argumento para explicar la llegada de la familia a crickley Hall, es el secuestro de cam, una herida que la familia no ha podido superar por obvias razones, Eve, la madre es la que ha golpeadoas duro está situación ya que se siente culpable por no haber podido proteger al niño adecuamente.
Segundo lo sucedido a los huérfanos en crickley Hall, es una historia muy trágica, crea un primer impacto muy fuerte porque no es justo que niños pasen por un abuso y una injusticia de ese nivel. Y lo mas aterrador es lo que sufren estos niños a manos de los adultos que supuestamente deben protegerlos y cuidarlos.
Ahora mi conflicto, no puedo decir que me parece entretenido, porque no lo es. Es muy traumático y suceden muchos horrores, con la historia de los huérfanos, la depresión de Eve por el secuestro de Cam y el impacto que es para esta familia el tener que vivir con el peso de no saber que pudo haber pasado con Cam. Son tantos temas tan delicados y tan complejos, que acertar y darle gravedad y a la vez mantener el terror por lo que ocurre en la casa, es bastante complicado… la ejecución me dejó muy decepcionada, se me hizo demasiado morbosa.
Muchos momentos por no decir todos se sienten muy superficiales, demasiadas casualidades y paralelismos que no tienen fundamento. Y solo pasan para intentar conectar a todos los personajes.
En estos momentos de mi vida este libro fue muy perverso y morboso… la forma en que describe el abuso y lo que hacían a esos niños… no tengo ni las palabras para expresar el horror que me causo este libro.
