Being “working poor” in 19th century Russia didn’t seem much fun, especially when you were expected to be so well mannered about it. What they really needed was some kind of revolution...

It was the first Dostoyevsky book I read and I was a bit disappointed. sometimes the letters were repetitive, or the memories of her were really long, but I didn't mind too much.

Interesting character study by a master of character development. This epistolary short novel is nothing groundbreaking, but fans of Dostoevsky will recognize the masterful way he develops the two main characters without really ever meeting them directly.

Was this even Dostoevsky? This was just dull and hardly like his later works. If you enjoy snooping through other people's mail then this might be the book for you. This is just series of love letters that don't really say anything of substance. The only hint of the literary heavyweight that was to come might be the vivid characterization that provides the letters with a realistic, if unexciting, impact. I'm sorry to say it but it possibly took a firing squad to wake up and inspire the author of this book to greater heights.
