I am not outdoorsy per se, and have little to no desire to track animals through the backcountry for days, or kayak white water rivers, or build a snow cave to sleep in with my neurotic dogs. That being said, who doesn’t have a weakness for cowboys? We know they’re not good for us, we know they’ll break our hearts, and we know they’ll drag us through the mud both literally and metaphorically. And yet... there’s just something about that hat tilted just the right way and the how their boots kick up dust and their tenderness with their horses and cows and dogs (human hearts, not so much) that makes us forget all the warning bells and dive headfirst into the Rose-colored abyss.

I enjoyed this collection of stories, and am glad I finally had an introduction to Pam Houston. She very much reminds me of Carver in that her writing is straightforward and simple, yet nuanced and layered at the same time. An engaging read that’s easy to breeze through.

This book hovers between three and four stars for me. I started reading it on a plane and then stopped because it seemed to be all about men who disappoint women and women who disappoint themselves. My mom told me to go back and finish it because there are some good stories in there, particularly about a dog, so I did. I enjoyed the stories near the back better than the ones in front, but I'm still a little bit relieved it's over. The sharpness of her writing, the clarity of her images, and the immediacy of her descriptions are all wonderful, but the stories tended to run together. My favorite was "Jackson Is Only One of My Dogs," which I felt was the most insightful, thought-provoking story in the whole book.

A book of stories that make you feel seen as a wanderer and hopeless romantic. Yet somehow, is not about love all entirely.

kind of depressing
