3.5-4 ⭐️ a little slow at times but overall a good story. My heart ached for Pia. She never gave up and never gave up hope. Tear jerker for sure!
Oh. My. Gosh! I had no idea that I would love this book as much as I did. Did I really want to read this daunting book about a pandemic, when we are living in one right now?
Let me tell you, I was sucked in from the very first chapter and I couldn't stop. I continued reading in disbelief as the author wrote about this historic time in our history—wearing masks, remaining in their homes to stay safe from the virus (sound familiar?)—with so many people dying horrible deaths within hours of falling ill.
The Orphan Collector story is centered around Pia, an immigrant who, at the age of thirteen, finds her life starting to fall apart. Hunger and death are everywhere and she is just trying to survive and find food for her brothers. Then things start spiraling downward for her
It was gut-wrenching to read one thing after the other go wrong for this strong, resilient girl. It just never seemed to stop for her. But I couldn't look away. I had to keep reading to make sure Pia was going to be okay. The drama of her life is what made this wonderful book a page-turner for me.
I highly recommend The Orphan Collector. You will not be able to put it down!

Back in 2019, before all of this craziness started, I saw The Orphan Collector on NetGalley and though it would be a fascinating read. But my request to review the book wasn’t approved until after COVID_19 pandemic started. I knew what The Orphan Collector was about, and I kept putting off reading it until recently. I got 33% of the way in before I had to stop.
The Orphan Collector is very well written—relatable characters, amazing writing, and vivid descriptions. I’m not usually one to back down when something hits a little too close to home, but after reading over and over about victims of the Spanish flu, of how they suffered, and how everything seemed so similar to what has happened now, it was unsettling.
Ellen Marie Wiseman is a great writer. And the elements of mystery made me want to read more. It’s just too bad that I started reading it when I did. I won’t give this review a rating because I don’t think I should when I haven’t finished reading the book.
NOTE: I received a complimentary copy from the publisher through NetGalley for review purposes only. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

I thought this book was going to be about a young girl's survival in Philadelphia during the 1918 Spanish Flu pandemic, but it took a melodramatic turn early on.
The story felt less like historical fiction and more like soap opera.

this book was so good i loved it so much i thought the characters were amazing and the story was so interesting!
I wanted to like this book so badly. I was sucked into the historical time of the flu but I couldn't get through the paragraphs upon paragraphs of descriptions. There was very little dialogue which I enjoy to break up these long paragraphs. Maybe I can try this book again at a later time. 3 stars
An incredibly tragic, engrossing, hopeful story of a young girl trying to find her missing family during the Spanish Influenza of 1918. Pia is a remarkable and enduring heroine, and the themes of love and family are so moving and relevant as our present-day pandemic rages around us.
