Okay, so first of all, let me say that I think Bernice Groves/Nurse Wallis is the most evil character since Delores Umbridge. I know she’s a fictional character but I hope when her time came, she was within feet of being reunited with her son and then ripped away and sent to the depths of hell for all the evil she did and the hate in her heart.
Deep breath. Just how much heartbreak can one character, especially a young one, endure and not break? A lot apparently in Pia’s case. Being terrified of this “sixth sense”, losing her mother and then her brothers, the orphanage, how she blamed herself for years and the not knowing…Lord, I think I would have broken ten times over.
This is a book I would have loved to have read for a book club and had people to discuss it with. Given everything that has happened in the world since the end of 2019…this book just resonates. I knew of the Spanish Flu but I never knew it was so gruesome.

4.5 Stars. I absolutely loved this story, although I had hoped for a epilogue with Finn and Pia a few years later.
Great historical read! I hated the nurse! Wow, what children then had to endure!
This book hits close to home with the current COVID-19 pandemic spreading through the world. Wonderfully written and heartfelt.
One of my new favorite books, especially given the current pandemic climate. I don’t think a book has made me root for and loathe characters as much as this one did in a VERY long time. Fantastic, gut-wrenching story that showcases a young girl’s bravery, hope, & perseverance.
I love a good historical fiction that teaches me about a part of history I know little to nothing about. In this case, the 1918 Spanish Flu which bears so many similarities to what we’re going through with COVID. I loved following along with brave Pia’s story. The evil of Bernice or “Nurse Wallace” was unimaginable. Overall, an amazing story of survival and triumph.

This book is copyright 2020 the same year as the COVID-19 pandemic hit. Amazing the similarities between the Spanish Flu pandemic of 2018 and COVID-19.
Good story line, I would recommend.
